| Descriptive Explanation of Dances Performance from Polynesia for Luau Programs Hawaii - Hula is the dance from Hawaii. Hula tells a story with the hands. A'auna style is the modern hula made famous by the hula dancers from the early Hawaii settler days when haole (foreigners) came to Hawaii and toured the islands, dancers would perform an entertainment hula in the hotels and on the docks greeting the visitors to the island. Kahiko is the traditional island chants of Hawaii. It honors the beginnings of Hawaiian culture. There are few hip movements in kahiko, the dancers sing themselves, the kumu plays the gourd to the dancers' chants. Implements, are Hawaiian dance instruments, usually the pi'ili sticks- bamboo, ipu- handheld gourd and uli uli, feather shakers. Lava lava stones are also implements played similar to castanets, however it is unlucky to take any lava stones off of the Hawaiian islands. So few groups on the mainland play with lava lava stones. Tahiti- The Ori, dance of Tahiti refers to the fast hip shaking dances of the Cook Islands and other parts of French Polynesia. The two main dances for performances include the aparima, a story telling graceful dance, the otea, the exciting fast dance done to drumming. There is also the ahuroa, a traditional ceremonial dance done slower than the aparima. Tokelau- An island that is no longer above water and whose natives reside on New Zealand for the most part. The dances we perform are from Tokelau musicians that often fuse different Polynesian styles together. Maori- The Aotearoa are the Maori tribe people in New Zealand. The dances we perform from New Zealand are called hakas. We include the haka poi dance, short poi and long poi dances. The poi is a ceremonial dance now performed by the women of nobility demonstrating their coordination and unity in dance. Pois are swung by an arm length rope attached to small soft balls and demonstrate the forces of nature such as wind, sun and bird. The Maoris are warrior people famous for their haka chants as well. Our group is also reknowned for one of the few Polynesian style Maori fire spinning. Marquesas- The Marquesas people perform ceremonial sitting dances, tape'a, hand clapping dances putu and are famous for their bird dances where the movement mimics the flight of a bird. Samoa- A Samoan Sasa is a hand clap dance done by dancers using their own bodies for the rhythm. Siva Afi-Dance of fire is performed traditionally by men, now women may choose to do so occasionally in modern times. The staff like blade is lit on fire and spun fast by the Samoan dancer, both ends are usually lit. |
